You May Already Own The Perfect Wine Cooler – (Really?)

You may already own the perfect wine cooler/fridge for you.  A couple of years back, Buzzfeed told the story of a young English woman who “converted” the built-in water dispenser in her new refrigerator into a wine chiller.  She said, “We ordered the fridge and Joe said it came with a wine cooler section and I said, ‘Or we could put it in the water dispenser’”. She shared an image of her clever hack,  a photo of her pouring a bottle of white wine directly into the water reservoir, and it was retweeted a staggering 69,000 times and received over 180,000 likes. Apparently a lot of people thought it was a very clever idea.

The idea might actually be useful for a party, where you want to keep your white wines cool, without needing to keep them on ice or pop them in and out of the refrigerator. There are some (obvious)  issues, however. Will you be serving more than one type of white wine, or wines from multiple wineries? You certainly don't want to pour them all in together – after all, this isn't a toga party. But, if you plan to serve a favorite bottle, and picked up a case, or several magnums, for the occasion, this solution might be perfect. Your guests will probably find it pretty amusing, and your party will be all that more memorable.

On the other hand, this hack is probably not a good solution for, well, any other wine chilling situation. If you're not going to be consuming all of the wine in a single evening, there are a lot of drawbacks to this approach. For one, do you really want your wine to smell like all the wildly varying foods living in your fridge? Garlic? Cheese? No, thanks. There's also the issue of the plastic off-tones from the reservoir itself, that you don't want to infuse your favorite Chardonnay.

And, what about unattended guests helping themselves to “water”, or your kids' friends over to play? Or, needing to take the dispenser apart for cleaning from time to time?

So, if you've got a super-casual event coming up, where a group of close friends are getting together and will be sharing several bottles of your favorite white wine for the evening, using your fridge's water dispenser as a wine chiller might be a fun and convenient idea. For any other occasion, you probably want to spring for an actual wine fridge, or at least a single bottle wine chiller, or even a bucket of ice.

Cheers!
